About
Andrew Chandler is Professor in Modern History in the Department of History. He studied at the Universities of Birmingham and Cambridge before lecturing at the Universities of Birmingham and Keele. He has also been a Visiting Lecturer at the University of British Columbia. He is a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society
He established the George Bell Institute to support the work of international scholars and thinkers at the Queen’s Foundation in Birmingham in 1996 and brought it to the 香港六合论坛 in 2007. The work of many of those who became Fellows of the Institute continues to define much in his own research while the commitments announced by earlier studies on the German resistance against Nazism and Christian martyrdom in the twentieth century remain important in his writing and thought.
Andrew Chandler’s interests embrace the interrelationship between politics, religion and diplomacy across the twentieth century. His work shows a particular commitment to Britain and Continental Europe, to issues of church and state, democracy and dictatorship, and to the evolution of international organizations. His work has often emphasized the history of the Church of England but it has also insisted on a variety of ecumenical perspectives. His 2005 study of the history of the Church Commissioners, 1948-1998, broke new ground in integrating the themes of religion, politics and international investments. With the American historian, David Hein, he published in 2012 a biographical study of Archbishop Fisher while in 2013 he co-edited with the Danish historian Charlotte Hansen an edition of the reports sent to the Archbishop of Canterbury from the Second Vatican Council. His biographical study, George Bell, Bishop of Chichester, 1929-1958, was published by Eerdmans in 2016 and Anglicanism, Methodism and Ecumenism: A History of the Queen’s and Handsworth Colleges, 1828-1970 was published by I.B. Tauris in 2018.聽He has also contributed to the Cambridge History of Christianity and to a new international history of global Christianity for the publishers EJ Brill and Kohlhammer.
He is currently completing a book on the British churches and Nazi Germany (for Cambridge University Press) and a study of Archbishop Lang, while editing with the German historian Gerhard Ringshausen a comprehensive edition of the letters, papers and speeches of Bishop George Bell (for Bloomsbury).
Committed to interdisciplinary and ecumenical collaboration, Andrew Chandler has organized a succession of conferences in the United Kingdom, Russia, Italy and Poland. He has also been responsible for a number of international public commemorations which have integrated historical, religious and political dimensions. He is a founder member of the editorial board of the North American-based Contemporary Church History Quarterly.聽He contributes regularly to a number of journals and has served on various councils, boards and panels.
Andrew Chandler teaches undergraduate courses in modern British, European and American history.聽He also supervises post-graduate students in modern British political and religious history.
