{"id":27599,"date":"2021-11-03T14:07:39","date_gmt":"2021-11-03T14:07:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.chi.ac.uk\/?p=27599"},"modified":"2023-01-30T15:02:00","modified_gmt":"2023-01-30T15:02:00","slug":"how-to-manage-your-money","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.chi.ac.uk\/blogs\/how-to-manage-your-money\/","title":{"rendered":"How to manage your money"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Learning to manage your money effectively is one of the important life skills that you can learn whilst at University.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4>Make sure you are getting everything you are entitled to:<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Familiarise yourself with the\u00a0<strong><span style=\"color: #a0843d;\"><a style=\"color: #a0843d;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.chi.ac.uk\/study\/undergraduate\/fees-finance\/funding-and-advice\/\">funding which is available to students\u00a0<\/a><\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Check that you are getting the\u00a0<strong><span style=\"color: #a0843d;\"><a style=\"color: #a0843d;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/student-finance-calculator\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">maximum level of funding available to you<\/a>\u00a0<\/span><\/strong>(or email\u00a0<strong><span style=\"color: #a0843d;\"><a style=\"color: #a0843d;\" href=\"mailto:studentmoney@chi.ac.uk\">studentmoney@chi.ac.uk<\/a><\/span><\/strong>)<\/li>\n<li>If you need or want to supplement your income with part-time employment, our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chi.ac.uk\/student-life\/careers-and-employability\/\"><strong><span style=\"color: #a0843d;\">Careers &amp; Employability Service<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0<\/a>may be able to help you find work.<\/li>\n<li>If you have children or a disability,\u00a0<strong><span style=\"color: #a0843d;\"><a style=\"color: #a0843d;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.turn2us.org.uk\/Benefit-guides\/Full-time-students-and-benefits\/Who-is-a-full-time-student-for-benefit-purposes#guide-content\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">claim benefits during your study<\/a>.<\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Open\u00a0student bank accounts with overdrafts\u00a0if you are starting a full-time undergraduate course. These can be a useful resource but it is important to remember that this is a way of borrowing money from a bank and you will need to pay it back (usually after you finish the course).<\/li>\n<li>For students who are experiencing financial difficulty, the University has a Support Fund and an emergency loan facility.\u00a0 Please see the information on our\u00a0<strong><span style=\"color: #a0843d;\"><a style=\"color: #a0843d;\" href=\"https:\/\/help.chi.ac.uk\/money-advice-money-worries\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Money advice: money worries help page<\/a>\u00a0<\/span><\/strong>for more information on these and how to apply.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Prepare a budget:<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Planning ahead and preparing a budget is a good strategy when it comes to managing your finances.<\/p>\n<p>There are many benefits to using a budget, the primary one being that it will help you to live within your means.<\/p>\n<p>It also helps students to help their funds to last and avoid the pitfall of spending large sums of money at the beginning of each semester only to struggle at the end of the semester.<\/p>\n<p>The University has its\u00a0own budget planner\u00a0or alternatively you can find other example\u00a0<strong><span style=\"color: #a0843d;\"><a style=\"color: #a0843d;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.moneyadviceservice.org.uk\/en\/tools\/budget-planner\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">budget planners<\/a><\/span><\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong><span style=\"color: #a0843d;\"><a style=\"color: #a0843d;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.savethestudent.org\/money\/student-budgeting\/student-budget-calculators.html#calculators\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">money calculators.<\/a><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Reduce your expenditure:<\/strong><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>One way to improve your personal finances is&#8230;to spend less!<\/li>\n<li>Full-time students are exempt from paying Council Tax, as are some part-time students.\u00a0You\u2019ll get information about this at the start of your course.<\/li>\n<li>Make sure that you are\u00a0<strong><span style=\"color: #a0843d;\"><a style=\"color: #a0843d;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/student-jobs-paying-tax\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">not paying too much Income Tax<\/a>.<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0Most full-time students don\u2019t earn more than the\u00a0<strong><span style=\"color: #a0843d;\"><a style=\"color: #a0843d;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/check-income-tax\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Personal Allowance of tax-free income<\/a>.<\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Assess your essential travel needs; for most students, paying for a car becomes a financial burden.\u00a0 Chichester and Bognor Regis are relatively easy to travel around on foot, by bike or using buses.\u00a0 The University subsidises\u00a0a bus service\u00a0(see the &#8216;Travelling by bus&#8217; section) which links the two campuses.<\/li>\n<li>Be cautious when signing contracts for mobile phones as you are often then committed to paying at the same rate for up to two years.\u00a0 These payments can become a burden so look for a competitive rate and make sure you will be able to afford it before signing up.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ask for help if you need it<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The University has a Student Money Advice Service which supports students to keep them informed about student finance, help with applications and assist with any problems you experience with your finances as a student.<\/p>\n<p>Students can email the student money team or visit us at one of our drop-in sessions.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chi.ac.uk\/app\/uploads\/2021\/11\/21-22-UoC-SF-QA.docx\"><strong><span style=\"color: #a0843d;\">Our Support Fund<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0<\/a>helps students who experience financial difficulty despite accessing all the support they can get from Student Finance England (or the Welsh, Scottish and Northern Irish equivalent funding body).<\/p>\n<p>The aim of the Fund is to help alleviate financial difficulty and enable the student to complete their course.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Useful pages:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><span style=\"color: #a0843d;\"><a style=\"color: #a0843d;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.chi.ac.uk\/study\/undergraduate\/fees-finance\/\">Undergraduate Fees and Finance<\/a><\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong><span style=\"color: #a0843d;\"><a style=\"color: #a0843d;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.chi.ac.uk\/study\/postgraduate\/fees-finance\/\">Postgraduate Fees and Finance<\/a><\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong><span style=\"color: #a0843d;\"><a style=\"color: #a0843d;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.chi.ac.uk\/study\/international\/fees-and-finance\/\">International Fees and Finance<\/a><\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Learning to manage your money effectively is one of the important life skills that you can learn whilst at University. &nbsp;
