{"id":22749,"date":"2021-10-13T09:48:06","date_gmt":"2021-10-13T08:48:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.chi.ac.uk\/?page_id=22749"},"modified":"2024-01-26T11:17:20","modified_gmt":"2024-01-26T11:17:20","slug":"international-loans","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.chi.ac.uk\/study\/international\/fees-and-finance\/international-loans\/","title":{"rendered":"International Loans"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h1>\n\t\tInternational Loans\n\t<\/h1>\n\t<div class=\"sidebar-menu-wrapper\"><\/div>\n    <p>There are two international loans available, please click on the links below to quickly access the sections:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"#fins-loan\">FINS private loan scheme for EU students<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"#us-student-loan\">US Federal Aid (US student loan)<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>\n\t\tFunding Option for EU Students\n\t<\/h2>\n<h3>\n\t\tFINS Loan Scheme\n\t<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.chi.ac.uk\/app\/uploads\/2021\/10\/FINS-logo.jpg\" alt=\"FINS logo\" itemprop=\"image\" height=\"92\" width=\"399\" title=\"FINS Logo\" onerror=\"this.style.display='none'\"  \/>\n    <p>FINS is a private student loan scheme that offers personalized financial solutions to EU students, enabling those with a lack of financial resources to pursue higher education abroad.<\/p>\n<p>The scheme was introduced to the 香港六合论坛 in 2021 and is open to all EU students that want to apply, applied, or have already received an offer to study an Undergraduate or Postgraduate course at the 香港六合论坛.<\/p>\n<p>EU students can access up to EUR 18.000 for postgraduate studies, or up to 25.000 EUR for undergraduate studies.<\/p>\n<h4>The FINS loan scheme is flexible and can be used for the following:<\/h4>\n\t\t\t <p>\u00a0 Tuition Fees<\/p>\t\t\n\t\t\t <p>\u00a0 Monthly living costs of meals and rent (including rent deposit)<\/p>\t\t\n\t\t\t <p>\u00a0 Books and other study materials or equipment<\/p>\t\t\n\t\t\t <p>\u00a0 Medical Insurance<\/p>\t\t\n\t\t\t <p>\u00a0 Transportation<\/p>\t\t\n\t\t\t <p>\u00a0 Urgent expenses<\/p>\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\t<a href=\"javascript:void(0);\" id=\"fl-accordion--label-0\" tabindex=\"0\" aria-controls=\"fl-accordion--panel-0\">Application process:<\/a>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<a href=\"#\" id=\"fl-accordion--icon-0\" tabindex=\"-1\" aria-controls=\"fl-accordion--panel-0\"><i>Expand<\/i><\/a>\n\t\t\t\t\t<p>As soon as you know which university you want to go to, you can get in touch with FINS on their\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hellofins.com\/en\/student-loans-for-eu-students\/?uni=University%20of%20Chichester\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">webpage<\/a>.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t<a href=\"javascript:void(0);\" id=\"fl-accordion--label-1\" tabindex=\"0\" aria-controls=\"fl-accordion--panel-1\">Eligibility:<\/a>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<a href=\"#\" id=\"fl-accordion--icon-1\" tabindex=\"-1\" aria-controls=\"fl-accordion--panel-1\"><i>Expand<\/i><\/a>\n\t\t\t\t\t<p>FINS takes into consideration the following eligibility criteria when assessing applications:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>EU citizen pursuing their studies in another country than that where they graduated their previous education cycle.<\/li>\n<li>EU citizen (that has no outstanding\/unpaid debts for previous loans by other financial institutions).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Further eligibility criteria can be viewed on the FINS<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hellofins.com\/en\/student-loans-for-eu-students\/?uni=University%20of%20Chichester\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u00a0webpage<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h4>\n\t\t<a href=\"mailto:info@hellofins.com\" title=\"Please contact info@hellofins.com for further information.\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\">\n\t\tPlease contact info@hellofins.com for further information.\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/h4>\n<h2>\n\t\tFederal Student Aid\n\t<\/h2>\n<h3>\n\t\tUS Applicants\n\t<\/h3>\n    <p>We participate in the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/studentaid.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">William D Ford Federal Direct Loan Programme<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>If you or your programme of choice is not eligible for the Direct Loan programme you can look at funding your studies privately. <a href=\"https:\/\/salliemae.com\/student-loans\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sallie Mae Student Loans<\/a> are currently the only available private student loans for US students studying at the 香港六合论坛.<\/p>\n<p>These pages have\u00a0information on Direct Loans available for students from the United States who wish to study at the 香港六合论坛. We do not cover other loans and grants such as the Pell Grant, as they are not available to students studying in Foreign Schools.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t<a href=\"javascript:void(0);\" id=\"fl-accordion--label-0\" tabindex=\"0\" aria-controls=\"fl-accordion--panel-0\">Eligibility<\/a>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<a href=\"#\" id=\"fl-accordion--icon-0\" tabindex=\"-1\" aria-controls=\"fl-accordion--panel-0\"><i>Expand<\/i><\/a>\n\t\t\t\t\t<p>In order to apply for funding, you must\u00a0meet the eligibility criteria set by the US Department of Education.<\/p>\n<p>You are required to be enrolled at least half-time at the 香港六合论坛; study on an eligible, degree-bearing course;\u00a0make satisfactory progress (SAP); and undertake your study in the UK.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Eligible courses:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Degree (undergraduate and postgraduate)<\/li>\n<li>PhD (see below for PhD related restrictions)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Mature students<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In order for US students to be eligible to receive US Federal Aid, you must have a secondary school completion credential or its equivalent. (See 34 CFR 600.54). Students enrolled under the mature student provision do not satisfy this requirement and are not eligible to apply for US Federal Aid.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Work placements\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Many of our degree programmes offer work placements and they can be compulsory or voluntary.<\/p>\n<p>A degree with a work placement is eligible for Federal Aid funding if the placement component meets all the below criteria.<\/p>\n<p>The placement&#8230;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>does not exceed 50% of the length of the degree;<\/li>\n<li>counts towards the course grades;<\/li>\n<li>is under the guidance and guided by university staff;<\/li>\n<li>does not take place in the US;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Study abroad and exchange\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Students in receipt of US Federal Aid can take part in voluntary study abroad and exchange opportunities available at the 香港六合论坛.<\/p>\n<p>Student should be aware, however that this is only possible if the host institution abroad is a Title IV eligible institution. A list of eligible institutions is available from the Financial Aid team (<a href=\"mailto:international@chi.ac.uk\">international@chi.ac.uk<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Students should also be aware that they will not be eligible for US Federal Aid funding if they choose to take part in study abroad\/exchange that takes place in the United States.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Who to contact?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Questions relating to federal funding and eligibility during study abroad\/exchange should be emailed to\u00a0<a href=\"mailto:international@chi.ac.uk\">international@chi.ac.uk<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>If you would like to find out about study abroad and exchange opportunities, please get in touch with\u00a0<a href=\"mailto:exchange@chi.ac.uk\">exchange@chi.ac.uk<\/a>.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t<a href=\"javascript:void(0);\" id=\"fl-accordion--label-1\" tabindex=\"0\" aria-controls=\"fl-accordion--panel-1\">Ineligible courses<\/a>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<a href=\"#\" id=\"fl-accordion--icon-1\" tabindex=\"-1\" aria-controls=\"fl-accordion--panel-1\"><i>Expand<\/i><\/a>\n\t\t\t\t\t<p>We are unable to offer federal loans to students on certain ineligible courses.<\/p>\n<p>Ineligible courses include courses that are less than half-time, are not degree-bearing and courses with online or distance learning\u00a0elements.<\/p>\n<p>You are also not able to study on non-degree programmes e.g. Foundation Degrees, Certificate of Higher Education etc. or take part in a study abroad\/exchange programme unless\u00a0it is with a Title IV eligible institution.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Distance learning degrees\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Degrees that are delivered fully online or have distance learning components are not eligible for US Federal Aid funding. Please see above for information on the CARES Act that covers remote learning during a the COVID-19 related national emergency.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Foundation Degrees\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Our Foundation Degrees are not eligible for US Federal Aid funding.<\/p>\n<p><strong>BSc (Hons) Adult Nursing \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Our nursing degrees are not certified for US Federal Aid purposes and are therefore not eligible for US Federal Aid funding.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Higher Education Certificate and HE Diploma &amp; Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We are only certified to fund undergraduate and postgraduate degrees. Therefore, Certificates and Diplomas, including the Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE), are not eligible for US Federal Aid.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Study Abroad\/Exchange &#8211; eligible institutions &amp; time spent in the USA\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Student should be aware that a voluntary study abroad\/exchange is only possible if the host institution abroad is a Title IV eligible institution. A list of eligible institutions is available from the Financial Aid team (<a href=\"mailto:international@chi.ac.uk\">international@chi.ac.uk<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Students should also be aware that they will not be eligible for US Federal Aid funding if they choose to take part in study abroad\/exchange that takes place in the United States.<\/p>\n<p><strong>PhD students &#8211; time spent in the USA\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Please note that PhD students are not eligible for US Federal Aid if their study includes periods of study or research in the U.S.A.<\/p>\n<p>PhD students may make themselves or the course they are studying on ineligible in these circumstances:\u00a0<em>Under \u00a7600.52, a foreign institution may not\u00a0permit students to enroll in any course offered by the foreign institution that takes\u00a0place in the United States, including research, work, internship, externship, or\u00a0special studies. Despite this prohibition, independent research done by an\u00a0individual student in the United States for not more than one academic year is\u00a0permissible if it is conducted during the dissertation phase of a doctoral program\u00a0under the guidance of faculty and the research can only be performed in the\u00a0United States. (Additional guidance on the Title IV program ineligibility of foreign\u00a0institution programs offered in the U.S. can be found in Dear Colleague Letter\u00a0GEN-11-18.)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>If you are a PhD student and are planning to spend any time during your studies in the United States, please make sure you contact the financial aid administrators to determine whether your plans impact on your loan eligibility.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Funding for an ineligible programme\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If your course is ineligible, you can look into Sallie Mae loan (Private Loan). Please see further information below.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t<a href=\"javascript:void(0);\" id=\"fl-accordion--label-2\" tabindex=\"0\" aria-controls=\"fl-accordion--panel-2\">US Federal (Direct) Loan Funding explained<\/a>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<a href=\"#\" id=\"fl-accordion--icon-2\" tabindex=\"-1\" aria-controls=\"fl-accordion--panel-2\"><i>Expand<\/i><\/a>\n\t\t\t\t\t<p>The principle funding available to US students studying at the 香港六合论坛 is the Federal Direct Loan.<\/p>\n<p>For more information on the direct loan please visit the <a href=\"https:\/\/studentaid.gov\/h\/apply-for-aid\/fafsa\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">student aid website<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The direct loan is available to cover the primary costs of education (tuition, student accommodation, books\/supplies and commuter travel) and is available to both undergraduate and postgraduate students.<\/p>\n<p>You should plan a budget for your studies (cost of attendance) and you should only borrow what you need.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t<a href=\"javascript:void(0);\" id=\"fl-accordion--label-3\" tabindex=\"0\" aria-controls=\"fl-accordion--panel-3\">Direct loan types available for US students<\/a>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<a href=\"#\" id=\"fl-accordion--icon-3\" tabindex=\"-1\" aria-controls=\"fl-accordion--panel-3\"><i>Expand<\/i><\/a>\n\t\t\t\t\t<p><strong>Federal Direct Stafford Loan<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Federal Direct Stafford loan is made up of two parts &#8211; \u00a0subsidised and unsubsidised, which have fixed limits depending on your status (dependent, independent or postgraduate). These may be topped up to the full cost of attendance (COA) with a PLUS loan, which is not an entitlement, but subject to credit checking and may be declined by the US Department of Education.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Subsidised\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This loan is assessed on financial need. No interest is accrued while you are in school at least half-time, during the grace period and during deferment periods. Afterwards these costs will revert to being your responsibility. The figures may change, so you need to check interest rates when applying for your loan(s).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Unsubsidized<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This loan is not based on financial need. Interest is accrued during the period of study and during the grade and deferment periods. No payments are required while you\u00a0are enrolled at least for half-time. Interest is accrued during the period of study.<\/p>\n<p>The applicant needs to complete a separate MPN + credit check in order to qualify for this loan.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t<a href=\"javascript:void(0);\" id=\"fl-accordion--label-5\" tabindex=\"0\" aria-controls=\"fl-accordion--panel-5\">Direct Parent Plus Loan<\/a>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<a href=\"#\" id=\"fl-accordion--icon-5\" tabindex=\"-1\" aria-controls=\"fl-accordion--panel-5\"><i>Expand<\/i><\/a>\n\t\t\t\t\t<p>This loan is available to the parents of dependent students.<\/p>\n<p>This loan helps to pay the cost of education up to the cost of attendance minus all other financial aid. (if applicable). We recommend that you apply for your loan in a timely manner and send us the required documents by early June so that we have enough time to process your loan request and confirm to the admissions team that you are exempt from paying the deposit.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t<a href=\"javascript:void(0);\" id=\"fl-accordion--label-8\" tabindex=\"0\" aria-controls=\"fl-accordion--panel-8\">How to apply for a direct loan?<\/a>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<a href=\"#\" id=\"fl-accordion--icon-8\" tabindex=\"-1\" aria-controls=\"fl-accordion--panel-8\"><i>Expand<\/i><\/a>\n\t\t\t\t\t<p><strong>1. Complete your FAFSA\u00a0(Free Application for Federal Student Aid)\u00a0application form &amp; apply for a PIN.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Completing your FAFSA application will generate a Student Aid Report (SAR) document, which we need in order to check your eligibility for a loan. Please keep the SAR for your records. You will be asked for our school code, which is: G36943.<\/p>\n<p>Check and update your FAFSA if necessary and make sure that it includes your expected family contribution (EFC) and the details of any previous Federal loans you have taken out. If any details are missing or if there are comments stating that further information is required, please make any necessary corrections and re-submit your application.<\/p>\n<p>You can submit your FAFSA from January, but we won&#8217;t be able to process your application until you have unconditional offer from the University. However, we can issue you an award letter to indicate what you would be eligible for at any point after you have submitted your application.<\/p>\n<p>You will need to email us (<a href=\"mailto:international@chi.ac.uk\">international@chi.ac.uk<\/a>) to confirm that you have taken the above step, so that we can send you an award letter with the loan amount(s) you are eligible for.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2. How much can you borrow?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Once we receive your email to confirm that you have completed the above steps, we will send you your estimated cost of attendance (COA) and a loan recommendation letter. You can use our loan recommendation to decide how much you need to borrow from each type of loan you are eligible for.<\/p>\n<p>The COA is made up of tuition fees and living expenses as determined by the University. This, along with other factors, such as your aggregate loan limit, dependency status and your estimated family contribution determine the amount you will be able to borrow for the academic year.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Please see below a table of &#8220;Estimated living costs&#8221; at the 香港六合论坛 (undergraduate students 39 weeks per year, including vacation periods).\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>You may wish to borrow less than the estimated figures. It is your responsibility to let us know your\u00a0EFC and other funding e.g. scholarships you are in receipt of.<\/p>\n<p><strong>3. Entrance counselling<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>As a first time borrower you will need to complete an online loan entrance counselling session before the loan can be disbursed. This session will help you understand your rights and responsibilities as a loan borrower and gives you tools to assist you with managing your loan.<\/p>\n<p>For a plus loan you will need to\u00a0complete a plus loan counselling.<\/p>\n<p>Once you complete your degree with us you will be required to\u00a0carry out a loan exit counselling.<\/p>\n<p><strong>4. Master Promissory Notes (MPN) and Plus Credit Check<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>You will need to complete a MPN annually before the loan funds can be disbursed. You will need to E-sign\u00a0your federal direct loan MPN on the student loans website using your Federal Student Aid PIN. After you sign in, choose complete MPN and then select subsidized\/unsubsidized. Follow the four step process listed on the student loans website.<\/p>\n<p>For a graduate plus loan or parent plus loan a separate MPN is required. A Plus loan is also subject to a credit check. We will need copies of the MPN(s) and a screenshot of the credit check &#8216;acceptance&#8217; message if applicable. Please note that credit checks remain valid for 3 months, so don&#8217;t do it too early in the year.<\/p>\n<p><strong>5. Email your signed award letter to the 香港六合论坛<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Email:\u00a0<a href=\"mailto:international@chi.ac.uk\">international@chi.ac.uk<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Please sign and return the award recommendation letter and email it to us.<\/p>\n<p>We will also need your parent&#8217;s consent to pay the PLUS loan funds directly to you. For this you will need to return a consent form, which will be emailed to you once we receive your forms.<\/p>\n<p><strong>6. What happens next?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Once we have received the documents listed above, we will check and confirm your eligibility for direct loans. We will send you an email confirming the details of your loans including the amounts and disbursement dates. If you need a UK study visa, we will issue you with a letter confirming the loan amounts.<\/p>\n<p>You will receive your loans once you have arrived at the University and completed your registration. The loans are paid directly to the University and is disbursed in two or three instalments depending on the type of course you are on. Please see the disbursement section below for more information.<\/p>\nWe receive your loans from the U.S. and convert this into GBP pound Sterling. We will then deduct the fees for tuition (e.g. 50%) and halls of residence (e.g. 50%) and transfer any excess funds into your UK bank account within 14 days of the disbursement date.<br \/>\nTo receive the excess (surplus) funds you will need to open a UK bank account as soon as you have registered onto your course. Bank account request letters are available via Chiview (printable documents).\n<p>As the disbursement process will take some time, so we recommend that you bring enough money to cover at least first 6 weeks of your stay in the UK. Please note that if you are a first time borrower your loan disbursement will take place 30 days after you have registered onto your course.<\/p>\n<p>Each loan disbursement is subject to you maintaining satisfactory academic progress and there are no changes to your status. Please see our Satisfactory Academic Progress policy under &#8216;Important Information&#8217; below.<\/p>\n<p>You have the right to cancel all or part of your loan. This can be done by emailing the International Student Advisory team 14 before the disbursement date listed on your notification letter.<\/p>\n<p><strong>7.\u00a0\u00a0Re-apply for your loan every year<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>You will need to apply for direct loan funding separately for each year of your study. Please note that this is not administered by us automatically. You will need to provide a new Student Aid Report (SAR) and new MPN(s) and credit checks (if applicable) for each year of your study.<\/p>\n<p><strong>8.\u00a0Exit Counselling<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Once you are approaching the end of your studies with us, you will need to complete exit counselling. You should do this\u00a0via the\u00a0Student Loans website.<\/p>\n<p>Please email us your exit counselling completion confirmation as a PDF before your final loan disbursement (at the beginning of your final semester with us). This is a formal requirement and the purpose is to ensure you are aware of the obligations with regards to your loan repayments.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t<a href=\"javascript:void(0);\" id=\"fl-accordion--label-9\" tabindex=\"0\" aria-controls=\"fl-accordion--panel-9\">How to apply for a private loan (Sallie Mae)<\/a>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<a href=\"#\" id=\"fl-accordion--icon-9\" tabindex=\"-1\" aria-controls=\"fl-accordion--panel-9\"><i>Expand<\/i><\/a>\n\t\t\t\t\t<p>We advise that you investigate US federal loans before applying for a US private student loan, as federal loans are often cheaper and most American students are eligible for them. US private student loans do not enable you to borrow more funds than US federal loans.<\/p>\n<p>If you are not eligible for US federal loans, a private loan can be the way to fund your studies.<\/p>\n<p>The University does not recommend any private lender, however as far as we are aware there is only one private lender that makes loans available to US citizens receiving their degree at a foreign school. We will post the cheque to you to be endorsed before you can pay it your local bank. Alternatively, we can ask for the cheque to be sent directly to your home address.
