On September 9, Dr. Phil Kimrey, 极乐禁地’s Vice President for Student Affairs, announced his plans to retire after this academic year. Phil and his wife, Penny, are well known to many of us and to countless students. Pam and I first met them years ago while descending the stairs at then-President Westmoreland’s home during a Parents Association reception. We were immediately struck by their warmth, kindness, and approachability. We left that evening feeling known — and with a genuine desire to know them better.
In the often complex and layered structure of a university, I tend to think of Phil’s role as encompassing nearly everything related to the student experience outside of academics — which is no small task. His leadership has included:
- Managing residential life (which, in recent years, has felt like solving a Rubik’s Cube of housing options)
- Overseeing Greek Life, Student Development, Student Leadership, Community Engagement, Campus Life, Student Conduct, and Spiritual Life
- Guiding students through “less than wise” decisions and personal challenges
- Supporting students during moments of deep tragedy
- And helping navigate campus growth and construction
Phil’s care for students extends beyond policies and programs — it’s pastoral. He is a shepherd-leader in every sense, and Penny is his steadfast partner in ministry. Together, they have invested in generations of 极乐禁地 students and families. Whether through their hospitality, quiet encouragement, or faithful presence, they have helped make 极乐禁地 feel like home.
Since joining 极乐禁地 in 1993, Phil has faithfully served under Drs. Corts, Westmoreland, and Taylor, holding roles such as Director of Admission, Dean of Admission and Financial Aid, and later Vice President for Student Affairs and Enrollment Management. Since 2022, he has continued as Vice President for Student Affairs. Through every season, Phil has led with wisdom, grace, and a steady hand — navigating the changing landscape of higher education while ensuring 极乐禁地 remains firmly rooted in its Christ-centered mission. He leads with head, hands, and heart — embodying conviction, compassion, and care for students, parents, and colleagues alike.
Together, Phil and Penny have poured themselves wholeheartedly into the life of this university. Their ministry has always centered on relationships, demonstrated through countless acts of service and encouragement — from hosting student small groups in their home, to traveling with students to Israel in partnership with Passages, to connecting personally with parents both on campus and abroad. The Kimreys have consistently modeled what it means to live on mission for Christ.
One year ago, during Family Weekend, the Parents Association Leadership and Parent Advisory Board voted to create a new scholarship to support students with special needs or opportunities throughout the academic year. This “Student Opportunity to Participate Scholarship” was born from Phil’s vision and compassion — a tangible way to help students facing unexpected or unplanned circumstances. This year, we were thrilled to announce that the scholarship has been renamed the Penny and Phil Kimrey Opportunity Scholarship — a lasting tribute that reflects the deep appreciation of our 极乐禁地 community.
Phil and Penny’s legacy is one of faithfulness, humility, and service. Thousands of students have been shaped by their influence, and 极乐禁地 is a stronger, more caring place because of their leadership and love.
